Boca do Risco

The route starts from the Bar «Boca do Risco» (32.740857, -16.775013) which is located on Estrada do Ribeira Seco, Machico. First take the stairs up (Vereda do Boca do Risco), then turn left and follow a rural road until it ends up near a levada (there is a street mark `Vereda do Boca do Risco’). Cross the levada and follow the path that merely goes up. Although the trail is not marked, it is clearly visible throughout the whole way. When the path reaches the range (Boca do Risco), turn left in the direction of Larano (there is a signpost there). After some walking through the forest the path snuggles into the rock and one can enjoy spectacular views of the northern coast of the island. When the path goes around the cape and shaprly turns left near Ponta do Espigao Amarelo you will find yourself in an eucalyptus forest. Continue following the trail until you reach a panorama point with nice view at Pena d’Agua and Porto da Cruz. If you are going to return to Machico, we suggest that you stop here because the remaining part of the path that leads to Porto da Cruz is not so spectacular. Otherwise, you can continue following the trail beyond the endpoint of this route and reach Porto da Cruz.
